Showing the Bro How its Done Territory Style …

30 May

Recently my favorite-only-brother came up to visit me. It was his first Darwin experience so I took it upon myself to be his personal tour guide. First on the agenda was a trip to the Adelaide river where we took a cruise to check out the Jumping Crocs

This one was a bit more active ;)

Moving on from crocodiles which to be honest is a relief as they are all I have had to write about lately !!

A few days after the croc cruise we headed off to spend the night at the Bark Hut Inn which is famous for being made pretty much entirely out of bark ( who’d of thunk it ????). It was built in the early days by this old guy called Terry Baldwin and a bunch of local Aboriginal people . Its history revolves around the buffalo industry and it remains pretty much the same today as it was back then which is why I love the place.

The pub also, like a lot of NT pubs, has a little hobby farm where you can find emu’s , snakes , buffalo , and a shitload of ducks. Here are a few pics of our trip to the Bark Hut including our roadside antics …..

On the drive to the pub we had to get through this massive cloud of smoke which was so thick I couldn’t see the road . It was the result of a burn off which is normal here as burning the grass controls bush fires (weird I know). The birds you can see in the pic are cheeky little shits and pick up burning sticks , dropping them somewhere else to start another fire .. so you need to watch those buggers !!!

It took this pig a while to struggle to her feet but she made it eventually !! This was taken at the Corroboree Pub/Caravan park/Service station/General store …..

We then decided to show off with the only fish we caught on this trip !! Check out the little girl below us , she ran in to pose with us and changed her mind at the last minute . I have no idea who she is.

Yay we made it !! Out the front of the Bark Hut

We are now officially in buffalo territory .. watch out after dark !!!

Image

The only safe way to drink and drive is to do it in a car with no motor ;) This is an old buffalo hunting car. I had to kick 2 little kids off to get this pic I hope you guys appreciate my effort !!!

All my brother wanted to eat was road kill

This snake was drinking water before I interrupted it – looks pissed off !!

What every Aussie bar should look like ! I bloody love this place !!!

The Daly River Swimming Club

29 May

I was supposed to update you guys about my Adelaide River cruise but that will have to wait till tomorrow as this story is gold ;)

A week or so ago 2 men found themselves in a very undesirable situation. They were fishing in the Daly River , NT not far from Darwin when the little fishing boat they were in capsized. They were stuck clinging on to the boat which they could not flip back over for 20 minutes before being rescued. Not such a bad situation except for the fact the Daly is home to some bloody big crocs .

In fact at first these blokes were under the impression that the boat capsized due to hitting a log .. well it turns out that log may of  been a 3.5 meter Salt water croc who after the incident was found badly injured further up the river. It was shot by the police ( yay a win for us ! these crocs have been taking local pets lately , I want them gone !!).

After being rescued by local fisho’s the two men were awarded lifetime member ships to the Daly River Swimming Club – the only club in the world no one actually wants to be a part of !!

Darwin Before Dawn

25 May

Hi Guys ! Its been so long between posts and I miss my blog so much !!! I have been happily surprised with visits from friends and family in the last 2 and a half weeks so I have a lot of reading and writing to catch up on !

I will start with these pics I took a couple of weeks ago. I had dropped Dave off at the airport and was hanging around Darwin city waiting to start work. For some reason I thought it would be awesome to take photos of lights , in the dark , with an ordinary camera – oh yeah and I must also mention how shitty the flash is. So in a moment of what I thought was creative genius I took several photos thinking how awesome they would look and maybe I should change careers … then I loaded them on to the computer.

Lets just say if you were on acid you might agree I am a fucking genius. Otherwise you will probably just wonder if I was the one on acid that morning ……

I can tell you right now , if Darwin had a coffee shop that was open before 630 am these photos wouldn’t exist ! And they call it a city .. pfft what ever

I will finish this off with a teaser for my next post , the day I took my brother to on the Adelaide River Queen ….

Crazy Pic of The Week

22 May

I don’t know where this pic came from but I love it !! A bit behind this week , I usually post these on Mondays but due to an unexpected visit from a mate of mine I was a little too drunk to operate a computer yesterday ….

A Very Lucky Escape

20 May

Image

This pic was taken at Mandorah near Darwin. The bloke didn’t know at the time he was about to become lunch for this sneaky croc until after he was back on land.  Just goes to show its the ones you don’t see that are the ones you need to worry about.

Here is another bloke fishing oblivious to the salty watching him from just meters away …

This guy below risked his neck for a $15 fishing lure.

But this guy is definatly seeking a Darwin Award …

Watch out buddy !!!!

They bite ….

The Coolest House in Batchelor

16 May

Last week my I went out to a small town called Batchelor which is near Litchfeild National Park  about 50km from Darwin. It is also near a town called Rum Jungle where my partner Dave reckon s he should live.

I love going out to Batchelor because it means I get to visit one of my favorite houses which belongs to a mate of Dave’s. The house was originally just a wooden frame with a tin roof and a few rocks here and there posing as walls . Since Dave’s mate bought it he has gathered more rocks and built the rest of the walls , cementing them in to give the place a cave like effect. Its awesome , I hope one day we can build something similar. Then again I change my mind every time I see a new house I like .. I guess I’m going to have to win the lotto and buy more than one … ;)

Here are a few pics of the house

The back of the house

The house is on a massive property which is surrounded by flood plains so it is necessary to have an kick- ass truck like this one ……

Image

The only way to start this truck is with a knife … I have no idea why either but the ignition seems to be missing so that might have something to do with it.

Being surrounded by flood plains and bush in the Territory also means being surrounded by Buffalo ..

Image

Ok they are a bit hard to see but I wanted to let everyone know what its like to drive in the bush with Dave. He will see one of these buggers 5km away and point it out like I care or something … then he gets all upset when I cant see it – Dave : “How can you not see that ?? Its right there , follow where I’m pointing , no not there , look where I’m pointing !”   Me: ” I AM looking , I can’t see anything .. Oh ok maybe I can see a black dot …  you know what I don’t even care , I hate Buffalo !!”

Which is pretty much the truth , I’m an animal lover but buffalo aren’t my favorites , they are big stupid angry animals that will stomp the shit out of any living creature in their line of vision … lucky they have crappy eyesight ! They don’t always do this but I have met a lot of people who have been chased or attacked by them and people do get killed sometimes. So I stay the hell away from them.

It’s always nice to get out to this property but sadly it will be sold in a couple of months. Id buy it myself except it is selling for the crazy price of $600 000 ! See what a pile of rocks can do !

Crazy Pic of The Week

I don’t know how to explain this pic …. lets just say driving around in the Territory is always amusing …..

They Probably Should of Checked the Pubs First …..

14 May

An old bloke by the name of Douglas Pyne went missing early Saturday morning , leaving the caravan park he lived in Howard Springs ( about 40 km from Darwin ) and announcing to everyone around that he was planning to walk to Palmerston. This is where I must add this old guy is actually 95 yrs old , Palmerston is a fair hike from Howard springs , and its between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius with no shade in that area … so this did concern locals who reported him missing … I’m not sure why , he had just told them where he was going …. but anyway after a day long search he turned up at the Wisdom bar and nightclub which is right in the heart of Darwin ( he obviously was very ambitious or someone has given him a lift as he well and truly bypassed Palmerston !). Another patron spotted him having a beer with his walking frame parked safely next to him and alerted police that he was safe and well. Cant a man go for a beer in peace ???? !!

The 3 Wheeled Troopy

10 May

My troopy is on its deathbed. As I mentioned in a previous post , I have been having major dramas with the rear axle which keeps popping out. Its like my troopy is a transformer and every 3 weeks it transforms itself into a bloody tripod !

I think Ron White tells the story better .. he seems to have similar dramas !

The last time this happened to me ( a week ago ) Dave welded the axle in .. lets see how long this lasts !

* Sorry for the lazy posts this week , I have my favorite (only) brother in town visiting Darwin for the first time so I am a tour guide this week .. will be back to normal (as normal as I can be ) next week *

Crazy Pic of The Week

7 May

Apart from crocodiles and sharks , the lifeguard’s attire on Casuarina beach is another good reason why I avoid Darwin beaches …..
